The GravityLight Foundation is a UK Registered Charity working to alleviate poverty and protect the environment through innovative design.

The Problem

Kerosene lamps are widely used for lighting in rural areas where electrical distribution is either not available, or too expensive for widespread use.

Our Solution

GravityLight is an innovative device that generates light from gravity.

Our Approach

In GravityLight, we are aiming to to deliver a product that will have a positive impact for people living without electricity.

Home Trials & Research

We are conducting trials across both urban and rural households to observe and learn the differences in distribution models, adoption rates and use of GravityLight. We are using a mixture of semi-structured interviews with sales agents and families using GravityLight, in parallel with quantitative data collection through mobile surveys.

Focus Groups

We have gained insights on how to tailor our packaging, communications and understanding of under electrified households in Kenya.

Research & Development

Power is typically generated and stored for later use. What if they removed the power storage - the battery? What if power could be generated as it was needed? They could reduce costs and might be able to gain in efficiency.

Markets & Structure

We initially developed GravityLight technology to provide a solution to people that currently depend on kerosene for home lighting. However, we quickly came to realise that GravityLight has many potential applications in other contexts.

Early Prototype: GL01

Not only did the success of our crowdfunding campaign dramatically change the scale of our intended production run, it also gave us the opportunity to further refine the product before sending samples to off-grid households and crowdfunders to test around the world.
