Key Principles

Around 15% of the world's population do not have access to electricity - that's 1 in 7 people. A problem that is so vast in scale has no single solution - no quick fix. Instead, the approach to solving this must be long term and multi-faceted; with an appreciation for the local economy and realities faced by those that currently use kerosene at the heart of the solution.

We are committed towards building our solution in a way that is sustainable and scalable. To do this, we have focused on three key areas of our approach; development, manufacturing and distribution.

Development

When developing GravityLight, our team started by looking at existing off grid lighting solutions, with the main category being solar powered lights. Breaking down these products into their component parts, the team observed that batteries comprised a third of the product’s cost and PV panels, another third.

Manufacturing

We aim to create local jobs, skills and livelihoods in the heart of the communities that will be using GravityLight. To underline our commitment to this objective, we have decided to assemble GravityLight in Kenya.

Distribution

Rather than undermining the local economy by giving away free products, we are working through local distribution partners and sales agents. This means that people can earn a living through selling GravityLights and similar products.
