What does chocolate and GravityLight have in common?

Aimee Coghill

What were you celebrating Saturday 14th May? We were eating a lot of great Fair Trade chocolate to commemorate World Fair Trade Day.

For those of you who aren’t aware, Fair Trade is an organization that is helping farmers and workers in developing countries achieve fair-trading through better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade. It is about supporting communities and giving them more control over their future. World Fair Trade day, which started in 2001, is an inclusive worldwide festival that celebrates world fair trade as a tangible contribution to poverty eradication.

On Saturday we celebrated fair trading by eating Fair Trade products such as Divine Chocolate and Green & Black. Continuing the chocolate theme, we also want to give a shout out to  Willies Cocoa and Uncommon Cacao, who take fair trade to the next level by focusing on premium quality and tackling slavery in the cocoa supply chain.

World Fair Trade Day is an important day for us at GravityLight, as we share the same values of sustainable development.

At GravityLight we have created a clean, reliable and innovative solution to empower those without access to electricity. Switching from kerosene to use a GravityLight breaks the fuel poverty cycle.

Sustainability is at the core of our beliefs- we want to contribute to local economies by partnering with local networks rather than disrupting markets and jobs with free give aways. We are keen, like Fair Trade, to find scalable and long-term solutions. We are doing this in our manufacturing strategy, as we aim to create jobs and skills in the regions where GravityLight will be sold.  This sustainable solution is one we feel passionately about.

Similarly to Fair Trade, your support is central in building a movement: by supporting us you are enabling us to launch GravityLight in Kenya this year and allowing us to build the foundations of a scalable sustainable alternative to kerosene. Fair Trade has improved the lives of millions, and we plan to do the same.

Click here to find out which products you can buy to promote fair trading and let us know how you support sustainable development and what you did to support World Fair Trade Day via Twitter and Facebook with the hash tag #WFTDay.

You can also donate to support GravityLight via our website and you can follow us on Facebook and Twitter and help spread our shared belief of sustainable development.
